The Town of Hanover and surrounding region is a part of what is known as "The Upper Valley". This designation refers to a geographic area stretching along both sides of the Connecticut River in Central New Hampshire and Vermont. At the region's center are the towns of Hanover & Lebanon on the New Hampshire side and Hartford (White River Junction) & Norwich in Vermont.
Each Upper Valley town has its own distinctive character and beauty. Hanover is home to Dartmouth College (one of the Ivies and the ninth oldest college in the nation) and enjoys a lively, traditional business district and beautiful countryside.
Follow the river and you will follow the path many early settlers took. The mighty Connecticut River flows from northern New Hampshire to the Long Island Sound. It provided transportation and easy access to southern New England markets, and rich farmlands were found along its shores. Here the line of defense was drawn during the French and Indian Wars at numbered forts, including the Fort at No. 4, now the town of Charlestown.

Advance Transit, the local bus system, services all area towns and shopping districts. Vermont Transit Bus Line operates bus service to virtually any destination outside the Upper Valley. Upper Valley Rideshare is a free carpool matching service for commuters in Vermont and New Hampshire. Amtrak's "Vermonter" passenger rail service from Washington, DC via NYC to Burlington, VT stops daily in White River Jct, Vermont.
